From delightful cottages to historic sites and bird reserves, East Anglia has a lot to offer. Suffolk has gentle rolling hills and is far from the mental image I had of windswept, cold fens.

Framlingham Castle

Framlingham was the chief seat of the powerful Bigod family, owned by the Dukes of Norfolk, the Mowbrays then the Howards. Finally, in a state of decay, it was bought by the philanthropic Sir Robert Hitcham, who endowed it to the poor.

Orford

The outer bailey of the castle is buried and appears as mounds around the keep, which is in fine form. In World War II experiments in radar were carried out on this coast and the masts and buildings can still be seen.

RSPB Minsmere

Minsmere is a haven on the coast for migrating birds. It has mudflats, woodlands and reedbeds.
