Fox Glacier

The Fox Glacier has been in headlong retreat in recent years. The valley sides are slowly collapsing inwards. Recent cyclonic rain has washed out the road, and some paths, completely. The old forest walks are very beautiful. Lake Matheson should not be missed on a sparkling sunny day when the Southern Alps are reflected in the lake.

This is where the road stops. The water flowing under the bridge is all glacier melt-water.

The tiny red machine is a huge back-hoe, trying to rebuild the road, washed out by ex-Cyclone Fehi - since when the road has been abandoned because of further floods.

OMG a sign of the times!

Beautiful mossy old-growth forest walk, called Minnehaha Walk is an easy stroll.
When they say the valley sides are collapsing, they are not kidding!
