I don't think I was on the path more then half the time on the upward journey, though coming down we stayed together and stuck with it. It was good to have someone to steady you after jumping across chasms. I would not like to do this trip alone. A momentary loss of balance could mean anything from a broken limb to instant death. The lakes in the hollow have the only water in this grey marble environment. This is Judy in contemplation. |
Choose perfect weather for this trip. Drive to Court House Flat, an hour fifteen from Nelson, and climb (4-5 hrs) the steep track through the forest to Granity Pass hut. Great hut, modern and warm, but no stove. Set out early for the summit, which you may achieve some four hours later if you don't lose your way in The Maze.
The Maze! OMG You feel like an ant, crawling about, trying to find your way. At first you are climbing between slabs of marble which narrow down until you are forced to climb upwards - only to discover you are on the blade of a knife at the top and another chasm plunges down again before you. Huge cracks with rocks strewn at the bottom are ready to mash you to bits. Cave trolls are the least of your problems. There are random cairns everywhere; many mean nothing. From time to time a piece of path can be seen, but mostly one is on solid rock, jumping over cracks many meters deep, or chimneying up and struggling with the backpack. Chimneying only necessary when one has lost the way! Often. |
