As usual the track to Kirwan's Hut starts in a civilised manner with a delightful wooden bridge.

The area had a gold mining settlement of which there is now no trace, apart from the track which starts with the best of beguiling intentions.

Soon one passes through wee tunnel and over a suspension bridge.

Walking back to the hut from the top of Kirwan's Hill.
The slope in the foreground is a headwall of a huge landslide. Hummocky ground towards where the forest began attests to its landing place. A short length of a fault scarp remains at the top, and slices through the top of Kirwan's Hill, where we sit.
Just to prove I was there - and in my best tramping leggings - I get sunburn through the hole.

Garvey's Coal Mine. Solid Energy Ltd. has gone bust and this mine is abandoned. Black stripes in the batters are the coal. Warramess! Locals have been involved in planting programs. Why don't the mine owners have to remediate? Because they have gone bust. When don't mines go bust?
The bush, though delightfully Hobbit-like and enticing is also tricksy. One can get very lost very fast. The trees move...
