Stunning backdrop, looking up at the western side of some the highest mountains in the Southern Alps: Mt Tasman and Mt Elie de Beaumont.

Franz Josef is right on the Alpine fault. The uplift of the mountains is more than matched by the erosion of the rock.

Peter's Pool; a pair of swallows twitter and dip into the water, rippling the morning stillness.

The old ice on the right, almost hidden by rock debris, was the only glimpse of the glacier available. The environment nearer the toe was too unstable.

In the circle is a sign that was put up in 2006 by the Dept of Conservation. The same view of where the glacier was (wasn't!) in 2016, only ten years after the sign was erected.

Warming has accelerated well beyond predictions for a hundred years in the future.
The rapid removal of the ice support makes it likely the valley rock walls will collapse inward, especially given the friable nature of the schist. This schist is foliated, meaning it splits easily along layers of crystals in the rock.
