OK, for all of you who are fed up of the landscapes, a genuine WW 11 submarine at the San Francisco Maritime Nat Park. She was built in just a few months and was used from 1943 until 1971. Submarines were sent to protect the liberty ships, which were being sent to the bottom with monotonous regularity. A liberty ship can be seen behind (they took 60 days from keel laying to launch). Without them Britain would have starved, but the North Atlantic run was brutal.
Submarines operated in the Pacific too. Less than two percent of all U.S. Navy personnel were submariners and yet they were responsible for fifty-five percent of all Imperial Japanese tonnage sunk, including one third of their warships. This was not without cost, for the submarine force recorded the highest percentage of men lost in the U.S. military, 24%.
