In northern Arizona, we took a Navaho guided tour to Antelope Canyon. This was an experience on a par with Grand Canyon for breathtaking beauty.
The 300 million yr old sandstone layers, laid down as ancient dunes, are eroded by floods and the water has formed these fantastic shapes.

Flash floods in thunderstorms are a hazard to hiking down the slot canyons and only the previous day, they had needed to clear everyone out pretty fast.

We had a tour of Glen Canyon Dam and ate our lunch dangling our feet. The tiny boat (wake is white smudge) is a tour boat of sixteen people coming up the Colorado towards the dam.

The Moenkopi formation borders Hwy 89A. It is composed of deep red sands and muds deposited by streams from the precambrian. Great masses of layered rocks have slid down so once-horizontal layers tilt backwards towards the cliffs they fell from. Not to mention huge boulders that have been transformed into outhouses.
